3 Common Fall Pests in Maryland

3 Common Pests to Look Out for This Season

Fall is host to many pest problems in Maryland, largely due to the colder climate. As the colder weather comes into season, many bugs, rodents, and other vermin seek shelter in the warmth of homes, where they can cause severe damage over time. Not only will they infest space between walls and below floors, but they cause damage to food, potted plants, and gardens as well. This makes pest control in Maryland a concern for many area homeowners. Here are three of the most common pests to watch out for this fall, along with reasons why you should avoid them:

1. Cockroaches

These insects are perhaps the most common pest found in the home. They infest kitchen cabinets and cracks between floorboards and walls. Cockroaches take advantage of every possible entry into your home. They are attracted by crumbs on the counters or floors, and usually come out at night to forage for food. In addition to being large, fast, and unnerving when found in the home, cockroaches also carry a number of infectious bacteria and are remarkably resilient. The best way to protect your home against cockroaches is to seal all food, vacuum and clean regularly, and block cracks or crevices that allow entry.

2. Ants

There are many different kinds of ants in Maryland, some of which are more dangerous than others. Carpenter ants, while less dangerous to humans, will eat the wood of your home, causing more damage than would seem possible from such a small pest. Ants will often infest a home looking for food, and can be hard to get rid of simply due to their vast numbers. Seal all cracks and potential entryways, and keep your floors and counters clean.

3. Rodents

Rats, mice, and squirrels can’t survive in cold temperatures without shelter, which causes them to seek refuge in warm homes in preparation for winter. In addition to breaking into your food stores and carrying diseases, rodents will chew on and eat just about anything in your home, including electrical wires and wooden supports. This can lead to severe home damages and fire risks. Despite their size, rodents can fit through remarkably small spaces, and will infest basements, attics, and spaces between the walls. The best way to eliminate a rodent infestation, use traps and bait, making sure all other food is securely stored.
