Your phone buzzes. You see the notification: Hantavirus. Maryland residents monitored. You look up at your attic door or into your crawlspace and wonder: “Is my home safe?”
It’s a natural reaction. When a word like “Hantavirus” enters the local conversation, anxiety follows. But at Brody Brothers, we believe that education is the best antidote to fear.
The recent buzz stems from the M/V Hondius cruise ship outbreak. This involves the Andes virus, a rare strain from South America. While it is the only Hantavirus known for person-to-person spread, the Marylanders currently being monitored were travelers. This is an imported health event. It is not an outbreak caused by the mice in our Maryland neighborhoods.
Statistically, 94% of Hantavirus cases in the U.S. occur west of the Mississippi River. The virus is carried by the Deer Mouse, which prefers rural, high-altitude environments.
The rodents we deal with in Baltimore, Owings Mills, and Rockville are typically the Norway Rat and the Common House Mouse. It is important to note: while these species are not vectors for Hantavirus, they are far from “clean.” They are mobile suitcases for other diseases, most notably LCMV.
What is LCMV? Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus (LCMV) is a rodent-borne viral infection that is much more common in the Mid-Atlantic than Hantavirus. It often begins with “flu-like” symptoms—fever, malaise, and muscle aches. While most people recover, it can lead to more serious neurological issues and is a major risk for pregnant women, as it can be passed to the fetus.
While we watch the news for rare viruses, a much more common health crisis is unfolding in Maryland: Asthma.
Maryland consistently ranks high for asthma prevalence. According to the Maryland Department of Health, there were over 21,000 asthma-related ER visits in a single recent year. The primary driver? Indoor air quality.
When a mouse infestation goes untreated, their dander and urine proteins dry into a fine dust. Every time your HVAC system kicks on, those particles are circulated. For a child with asthma, a hidden rodent problem in the basement can be the difference between a good night’s sleep and an emergency room visit.
Outbreaks like the one we are seeing now remind us that rodent control isn’t a “one and done” task—it’s year-round protection. Mice don’t just come in during the winter; they seek out the cool, moisture-filled voids of your home during the humid Maryland summers as well.
This is where the Brody Guard 365 plan comes in. This isn’t just a brand name; it’s a proactive defense system. The program provides year-round peace of mind through quarterly inspections and preventative treatments tailored to the changing seasons in Maryland. We don’t just “set traps.” We are engineers of your home’s perimeter. We focus on Exclusion—the process of finding every 1/4-inch gap (the size of a pencil) that a mouse can use to enter your living space. By sealing the home, we stop the “biological factory” from starting in the first place.
If you find a mess in a pantry or garage, the most dangerous thing you can do is grab a shop-vac. Vacuuming or sweeping turns dried rodent waste into a toxic mist.
The CDC-approved Wet Method is the only way to clean up safely:
Outbreaks remind us that our homes should be our sanctuary. Rodent control is a fundamental part of home health and preventative medicine. Don’t wait for a sighting to protect your family’s air quality.
