Where Do Termites Come From?

Termites can cause a lot of damage to your home, and you’ll notice several signs of their presence. In Maryland, the termites you need to prepare for are the eastern subterranean species. This type of termite possesses a white and brownish appearance, has six legs, is a 1/8th inch long, and can appear in other regions within the United States besides Maryland. Even if you suffered an infestation before, it’s important to prepare for termites by knowing exactly where eastern subterranean termites come from. This is crucial because they are one of the most destructive termites around. This way, you can dispose of the various habitats where eastern subterranean termites typically take shelter on your property.

Termites are pesky little insects that can easily find their way into your home due to how small they are. You’ll typically find eastern subterranean termites outside within the foundation surrounding your home. This is because this type of termite lives underground in colonies that can host as many as one million. Subterranean termites will likely be in places where soil, wood, and moisture are present. Old tree stumps and fallen branches are another place in your yard that may be home to subterranean termites. Subterranean termites also build tunnels where they can avoid the open air and still access food.

Now that you know where termites typically live, you can eliminate these areas before termites can enter your home and cause all sorts of damage. To prevent an infestation, make sure wood isn’t in contact with soil, water accumulation is away from your foundation, and crawl space humidity is low. Even though you can take precautionary measures, we still recommend you utilize professional termite inspection if you’re in the Montgomery County or Baltimore County, Maryland, area. Professionals from Brody Brothers Pest Control can correctly identify and handle an infestation in your home today. If an eastern subterranean termite problem goes untreated for a long period, it can eventually take down an entire building.
