Pet Safety

Mosquitoes are not just a nuisance to us humans, but they pose a severe danger to dogs and cats as well by potentially transmitting heartworm as well as diseases like West Nile virus. Make sure to give your pets regular heartworm check-ups at their veterinarian, especially during the late fall through the summer when mosquitoes and ticks are in full-force.

If you notice your dog playing or rummaging through leaves or bushes, check your pet for ticks afterwards, and if you spot one, remove it with a tick spoon (which we will provide you for free) or with tweezers as a secondary option. If you are using tweezers, grasp the tick as close to your pet’s skin as possible, and pull it straight out without twisting the tick or squeezing it hard enough to break it. You will want to avoid breaking the tick because if the head remains burrowed into your pet, there is a higher risk of disease transmission. Seeing as dogs often spend much more time in the yard than their owners do, treating your yard for mosquitoes and ticks is especially important for minimizing their parasite risks.
