Personal Protection

Although getting rid of mosquitoes and ticks is the focus of our job, prevention and personal protection begins with you. There are several steps you can take to further protect yourself from mosquitoes and ticks when you are out-and-about. Here are a few pointers:

  • Use insect repellant.
  • Try to avoid being outdoors if possible at dawn and dusk and in the early evening.
  • Cover infant carriers with mosquito netting.
  • Eliminate any standing water that can be eliminated from your yard.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants or long skirts if the weather permits.

In order to help minimize ticks in your yard, be sure to keep your yard well mowed and clear of debris. Keep birdfeeders along the edges of your yard in order to discourage tick-carrying rodents from the area, and trim back shrubs and bushes to widen the area between the edge of your lawn and more woody or shrubby regions. If you must work in brushy areas, it is best to have your pants tucked into your socks and your shirt tucked in, and periodically check clothing for ticks. One should avoid wearing shorts in these places.
