Common Pest Problems in Pikesville Housing

Pikesville, Maryland dates back over two centuries to the late 1600s, when Fort Garrison (a historic fortification building) was built to serve as a stronghold against attacks during the French and Indian War. Sir Francis Nicholson commissioned the construction of this frontier in 1693, but the property was built and acquired by the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks in 1695.

In 1971, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Come 1798, it was in private ownership.

Modifications were made to the Fort Garrison in the early 19-century, including the addition of a second story loft and shingle roof, but it still stands in its original location at approximately 48 feet long and 18 feet wide. Back then, Pikesville was a tiny town that only ran a few short blocks.

Pikesville Housing in 2017

Today, Pikesville is a prosperous Baltimore County suburb that is home to more than 30,000 residents, 4,500 businesses, and who knows how many pests!

The community has seen tremendous growth over the years, especially around the Garrison/Hooks Lane area with a large development plan starting in 1976.

The late 1980s and 1990s were critical construction years that brought multi-million dollar developments to life and paved the way for communities like Annen Woods, Green Tree, Grey Rock, Cobblestone, and Avalon.

With 20+ years of housing construction going on in the Pikesville area, you have to wonder…

What Happened to the Wildlife During the Development of Pikesville?

With massive construction projects underway, the wildlife and pests that called Pikesville “home” (before many of us humans did) were displaced over the years.

At Brody Brothers, we have seen a pattern of nature coming back to claim its territory after construction. Our most common calls about pests in the Pikesville area in regards to construction issues are as follows:

  • 1 to 5 years post-construction: Mice taking advantage of holes left by builders
  • 5 to 10 years post-construction: Ant populations building up and becoming an indoor nuisance
  • 10+ years post-construction: Termites move in, deeper issues are revealed

It is important to remember that new communities are often constructed different ways, meaning that they will certainly have different pest issues.

Some Green Tree properties, for example, have wood shake roofs that have always presented issues with silverfish; whereas Grey Rock and Avalon properties featuring a stucco facade often encounter in-house ant infestations.

We have also seen an increase in termite activity in areas like Cobblestone, where trees in the community are beginning to mature – especially white pines.
